Who Would You Hire

Posted By on June 15, 2018

You are the hiring manager for exactly one open position.  You must hire one person — not zero people, nor more than one.  After interviews, etc. you have two candidates from which to choose: equally qualified for the position in every measurable way.

Which one do you hire?

You hire the one who overcame more challenges to get there.  This is the person who has faced challenges, such as are certain to arise in the course of their employment, and learned how to face and overcome them.  This is the person who is less likely to shrink in the face of adversity.

In life we all face difficulties — some fair and rational — some completely unfair and perhaps downright mean.  We often meet people who simply dislike us, but with whom we must still interact.  Some people face physical or emotional injuries that must be overcome.  Some wounds are accidental, some caused by others, some may be self-inflicted due to our own behavior.  All must be overcome if we are to reach our potential or just to find joy and contentment in our lives.

As we go through life, meet challenges, and overcome them, we grow.  This is how we strengthen character.  This is how iron sharpens iron.  The next time life throws up a mountain in your journey, don’t whine and revile against it: embrace it and beat it.  You’ll look at it in your rear-view mirror and smile.
